Professional Conduct Committee

Professional Conduct Committee

The Professional Conduct Committee includes experienced practitioners across a range of legal specialities and two lay representatives. It is primarily responsible for investigating conduct complaints against barristers and taking disciplinary or other action where appropriate.

In addition the Professional Conduct Committee regularly circulates updated advice and guidance to barristers.

Where a Professional Conduct Committee determines that a barrister has not adhered to the standards expected of the profession and as articulated in the Code of Conduct, they will ask the Executive Council to establish an independent Disciplinary Committee to consider the matter further.

Service Standards

In addition the Bar Council also has responsibility for implementing, in accordance with the Legal Complaints and Regulation Act (NI) 2016, procedures for the resolution of complaints relating to professional services provided by members of the Bar.

Details on how to raise complaints about the conduct of, or services provided by, a barrister can be found here.
