Biography

Ross was called to the Bar in 2024 after completing his pupillage with an experienced chancery and commercial practitioner.

Before being called to the Bar, Ross qualified as a solicitor and practiced in Northern Ireland for a number of years, gaining experience in private practice and as in-house counsel for a construction and civil engineering company.

With nearly 10 years experience working within the legal sector, Ross now accepts instructions across all practice areas, but has a particular interest in Commercial Law, Insolvency, Land Law and Probate.

Qualifications

Ross holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Ulster University and a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Queen’s University, Belfast. He later completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Legal Studies at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Queen’s University, Belfast before being admitted as a Solicitor. Ross later went on to be awarded the Degree of Barrister-at-Law by The Honourable Society of the Inn of Court of Northern Ireland before being called to the Bar of Northern Ireland.

Experience

Commercial Law:

Ross has broad commercial law experience, advising clients on the drafting, negotiation, and execution of a wide range of contracts across multiple sectors. He regularly advises on contractual arrangements, including standard form agreements and bespoke documentation, tailored to meet the specific needs and risk profiles of individual projects. His work to date also includes advising on associated security arrangements such as guarantees, indemnities, and warranties.

In addition to his transactional work, Ross advises on contractual disputes, including issues of interpretation, breach, termination, and enforcement.

Insolvency:

Ross has experience advising on a range of insolvency-related matters, acting for both creditors and debtors in corporate and individual insolvency scenarios. His work includes advising on statutory demands, bankruptcy petitions, and winding-up proceedings, as well as the enforcement of security and recovery of debt. He also provides guidance on directors’ duties in the context of financial distress and supports clients in navigating the legal and procedural aspects of insolvency.

Land Law:

Ross has experience in a wide range of land law matters, including resolving landlord-tenant disputes such as dilapidations claims and applications under the Business Tenancies (Northern Ireland) Order 1996. He regularly conducts property due diligence and is skilled in drafting and negotiating commercial leases. His practice also includes advising on title rectification, as well as disputes involving boundaries, rights of way, and adverse possession claims

Probate:

Ross has experience drafting and advising on Wills, administering estates, and advising on and preparing both Controllership applications and Enduring Powers of Attorney. During his tenure as a solicitor, he was also a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Other:

In academia, Ross lectures Land Law at Ulster University and tutors Property Law and Practice, and Property Litigation at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies.

Ross also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Northern Ireland Young Solicitors’ Association from 2019 until 2024 and was ultimately appointment as Chair of the Association for year 2024. Ross then served on the Executive Committee of the European Young Bar Association until 2025.
