John was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 2011 and his practice has developed into two main areas - Criminal Law and Civil Law. John’s Civil Law experience is in personal injury; including road traffic accidents, employers’ liability and Roads (NI) Order claims. Alongside his criminal experience, John has experience of unlawful arrest and false imprisonment claims. His work is for both Plaintiffs and Defendants and he appears regularly in the County Court and High Court. John also has experience in probate and licensing matters.
John provides advices from the initiation of proceedings through to their disposal including advice on liability, quantum, tactics, directions, consultation, liaising with experts and preparing submissions. John has a particular interest in cases where fraud has been alleged.
In 2017 John was appointed to the Government Legal Services Panel of Counsel for a five year period, taking instructions from the Departmental and Crown Solicitor.
John has been instructed in several complex extradition matters involving Category 1 and Category 2 Requested Persons. John’s involvement has been from initial execution of a warrant through to instructing experts, gathering evidence and preparing and presenting submissions. John has also been involved in appeals to the High Court.
In his Criminal Law practice John has been instructed from the Youth Court to the Court of Appeal, including preliminary matters of bail in the Magistrates’ Court and appeal to the High Court, as well as trials and sentencing. His particular areas of experience are drugs offences, assaults, burglaries, welfare fraud, excise and duty offences, perverting the course of justice and proceeds of crime matters. John also regularly receives instructions from a main utility provider in Northern Ireland in pollution and other environment-related offences. John has appeared before the Parole Commissioners for Northern Ireland as well as the Mental Health Review Tribunal.
John also appears for both Claimants and Respondents in the Industrial Tribunal and Fair Employment Tribunal for Northern Ireland in cases such as unfair dismissal, redundancy, breach of contract and discrimination claims.
